The Role of Indonesia in World Peace
There are many roles for the Indonesian state in creating world peace through international relations and international organizations. As a country, it turns out that Indonesia does have a fairly central role in world peace. Let’s follow the story of Indonesia in its peace missions below.
What is Indonesia’s Role in World Peace?
1. United Nations (UN)
Indonesia’s role in world peace is realized through active participation and contribution to the UN Peacekeeping Mission or UN MPP. In the international context, this participation is an important and concrete indicator of a country’s role in contributing to maintaining international peace and security.
Meanwhile, in the national context, this involvement is a means of increasing the professionalism of individuals and organizations directly involved in deploying international operations.
Indonesia’s role in world peace through the UN MPP began in 1957. At that time Indonesia sent 559 infantry personnel to become part of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in Sinai.
This delivery was followed by the contribution of 1,074 infantry personnel (1960) and 3,457 infantry personnel (1962), becoming part of the United Nations Operation in the Congo (ONUC) in the Republic of the Congo
2. Garuda Mission
Indonesia’s role in world peace is also realized through active participation and contribution through the Garuda Mission or Garuda Contingent Mission. The Garuda contingent is a peacekeeping force whose members are drawn from the Indonesian military who serve under the auspices of the UN.
Indonesia’s active role in sending the Garuda Contingent on peace missions during the world war. The countries that have been the destination of the Garuda Contingent mission are countries in the Middle East such as Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq. Asean countries such as Cambodia, the Philippines and Vietnam. And there are Eastern European countries such as Georgia and Bosnia.
3. Asian African Conference (KAA)
Next, Indonesia’s role in world peace is realized through active participation and contribution through the Asia-Africa Conference (KAA). The first attempt made by Indonesia the Prime Minister began on August 25 1953, by presenting the government program before the Provisional People’s Representative Council.
Apart from that, it was conveyed that there was a need for the government to be active in reducing world tensions which required cooperation with countries with the same situation and position as Indonesia, namely Asian-African countries who were working together to free Asian-African countries from the influence of the cold war at that time.
4. Non-Aligned Movement (NAM)
Indonesia’s role in world peace is also realized through active participation and contribution to the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). An international organization consisting of more than 100 countries that considers itself not aligned with any major power.
In NAM, Indonesia has an important role because this country has the principle of free and active foreign policy, not supporting any military pact or military alliance. This principle is considered to be in accordance with the objectives of establishing NAM.
In 1992, another important role for Indonesia for the NAM Summit was as host and President Soeharto as chairman of NAM. At that time, Indonesia initiated technical cooperation in several fields such as agriculture and population or initiated efforts to revive North-South dialogue.
5. Djuanda Declaration
Including Indonesia’s role in world peace is through the Djuanda Declaration. This is a form of struggle on the international stage so that Indonesia has sovereignty over all its territorial waters and islands.
This declaration was initiated by the Prime Minister Indonesia, Djuanda Kartawidjaja on December 13 1957. The contents of the Djuanda Declaration stated that Indonesia declared itself to be an archipelagic country with its own style. Since the beginning of time this archipelago has been one unit.
6. Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)
No less important, Indonesia’s role in world peace is through the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN, an inter-nation union or organization whose territory is in the Southeast Asian region.
Indonesia is one of the countries that initiated the founding of ASEAN. This was done through the Indonesia representative, namely the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who signed the Bangkok Declaration. Apart from that, of course Indonesia also has its own role as a member of ASEAN.
Indonesia’s role in bringing about peace in the Southeast Asia region was seen when Indonesia helped bring about peace in the conflicts in Cambodia and Vietnam. Indonesia was appointed by ASEAN to be a mediating party in the conflict.
In another case, namely when the Philippine government and the Moro National Front Liberation or MNFL came into conflict. These two parties finally agreed to a peace agreement which was then held in Indonesia.
7. Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC)
This is also no less important, Indonesia’s role in world peace, namely participating in the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). The formation of the OIC was motivated by Israel’s burning of the Al-Aqsa Mosque on August 21 1969.
Indonesia’s role in the OIC includes participating efforts to resolve the conflict between the Philippine Government and the Moro National Liberation Front or MNLF. Indonesia supports Palestinian independence with its capital in Jerusalem. This support is proven by diplomatic relations with Palestine on October 19 1989. Indonesia also participates in fighting for a settlement. the issue of Islamophobia.
8. Jakarta Informal Meeting (JIM)
The Jakarta Informal Meeting (JIM) is one of Indonesia’s roles in world peace, especially in the Southeast Asia region. The initiator of JIM was the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Alatas. JIM is an attempt to resolve the Cambodian conflict. Through JIM, the Cambodian problem could be resolved based on the Paris Agreement of 23 October 1991.
So, that’s the discussion regarding Indonesia’s role in world peace. It turns out that Indonesia has many roles in world peace. We, as the young generation of Indonesia, should also play an active role in maintaining peace in the world. And hopefully with these movements and your help, the world can be more peaceful.
